Sherwood Park Golf Club is committed to protecting and caring for our environment, and promoting sustainability. We’re targeting key aspects of our operations to reduce our environmental footprint and resource use - including water, fertilisers, agrichemicals, sand, electricity, and more. Here’s how we’re making a difference:
- Pest control
- Our volunteers run a regular trapping programme in partnership with Predator Free Whangarei.
- We also work with Gotcha Traps. Their tracking tunnels are specially designed for species identification and can even identify individual mammals by the size of their feet.
- Waste management
- Composting: We compost clippings, leaves, and organic waste to enrich our soil.
- Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: We promote a culture of reducing waste, reusing materials, and recycling whenever possible.
- Fertiliser Use
- We follow the Minimum Levels of Sustained Nutrition framework, applying fertilisers only when soil lacks nutrients - avoiding both deficiency and excess.
- Native Vegetation
- We are proud of the native species thriving on our course and are gradually replacing exotic trees with native varieties through our tree plan.
- Eco Systems
- We are currently partnering with the Department of Conservation to study the impact of our bush sustainability in respect to biosystems and in particular local long tailed bat populations.
- Weed control
- We’re initiating discussions with Northland Regional Council to improve weed and pest plant management.
- Water Conservation
- Our modern irrigation system ensures efficient watering of greens, tees, and fairways.
- Energy Efficiency
- Solar panels reduce our reliance on the grid
- All upgraded equipment is energy-efficient
- LED lighting helps lower energy consumption.
- Community Partnerships
- We collaborate with iwi, environmental organisations, and local government to promote sustainability across the region.
